October 6th , 2009The Balestier Road area in Moulmein Constituency is well known for many well known bak kut teh shops in Singapore - there are six of such shops along Balestier Road

- Bak Kut Teh Stall in 'Mega Coffee Shop' , No. 565 Balestier Road
Then, there is THE OTHER famous bak kut teh shop in Moulmein - 'Ng Ah Sio Pork Ribs Eating House' at No. 208 Rangoon Road.
All in, a total of seven bak kut teh shops to try - so, which ones are good....?
We decided to go first to the one known to have the longest queue.......have to be good! So, on a Friday night at around 10.00 pm we arrived at the 'Founder Rou Go Cha' shop to find a short queue, luckily - maybe it was quite late already.
We got into the air-conditioned restaurant which was not very big - with about 20 tables and got a table by the wall which was adorned with lots and lots of photos of the owner , Mr. Chua Chwee Whatt with celebrities from Singapore, Hongkong, Taiwan, etc.

Our order was taken and the food came quite quickly - we had the pork rib soup, tau kee, preserved vegetable and the yew tiau.
We found the soup very clear in colour, tasted quite peppery but without any strong garlic taste.
It was clean-tasting and mild , compared to many others we tasted. There was just a light touch of the pork bone flavour which was nice. The pork ribs were oversized ones with firm but tender meat - so tender we all had no problem cleaning up the ribs to bare bones. Goes well with the red-chilli/ thick dark soy sauce. Yummy!
The tau kee was good too - so soft and juicy and easy to eat. The preserved vegetable we found to be 's0-so only'....

Overall, a very good meal. And, oh - we saw lots of the restaurant's braised pork trotters dish being served around the restaurant, must be good. Too bad we did not have any more capacity for that by the time we finished our meal. Cost for the meal - an average of $8 per person. Certainly this is one Bak Kut Teh shop we will recommend......
